Artist Statement

Artist’s Statement

I have always enjoyed making marks on a surface to create an image.
Printmaking regardless of the process being intaglio, relief or monotype, is one of the media in which I feel compelled to do this. It is my objective to create images that not only speak of marks but to have marks that speak for the image. As an artist I am foremost an observer of things around me whether they be the landscape, people or animal.
In many of my images I use the crow is a metaphor for humankind. To me the crow is an observer of events, the ever present watchful eye. My use of color coupled with the darkness of the image, the composition and the subject matter of the crow often tell a story of mystery and turmoil. Hopefully this sparks a curiosity in the viewer.
As an artist I am interested in narrative images, which goes back to my childhood when I was attracted to the illustrations in books. I was far more interested in the story I found in the illustration than the words on the page. I could use my imagination to create my own story. I want my images to tell a story and for you to read what you will into the images.
My maternal grandfather introduced me to the printed images on postage stamps and this was and still is an interest of mine and I believe has played a crucial roll in my interest in the printed image.
